5th grade student teacher needs your help?

My class is planning a trip to the NY transit Museum. Before the trip, I plan on giving my students three lessons one will focus on the public transportation in the past, the other will focus on the history of the NY subway system and the other lesson will focus on subway maps (then and now).

However, I am having trouble in trying to figure out what lessons to give to the students when they return from the trip. I was planning on giving three lessons... one would be asking them to compare the old trains to the new subway trains. But i am not sure what the other two should be about... I want something fun like an art activity or something .
DO you have any ideas i would gladly appreciate it .. thanks

Possible ideas:
- Have the students create an advertisement or informational pamphlet on the subway system that encourage others to ride.
- Have students do further research on trains and their impact on US History or research how subway systems are used in other countries.
- Have students brainstorm the positive and negative aspects of using a subway.
- Have students come up with their own list of possible research questions and then brainstorm ways to find answers to their questions.

Hope this helps! You sound like a great Student Teacher!

120 Mma Gyms And 1000 Mma Fighters On The Map

The Mixed Martial Arts phenomenon is rising more and more everyday. For some, MMA is really old and has been here for a long time in a way of ancient wrestling, Chinese martial arts fights among old wu-shu schools, or even gladiator unarmed fights in ancient Rome. But for others the MMA as a sport with clearly defined rules and focus on the victory without (too much) harm represents a new sport category. The fighters have been allways prepared in the gyms, which persists till our age. But which MMA gyms are the best? And where are they situated? Where are trained the TOP MMA fighters? Now you can find out.

Top MMA fighters are already natural superstars recognized all over the world. We can mention only a few like Fedor Emelianenko, Shane Carwin, Royce Gracie, Brock Lesnar, the Nogueira brothers, Lyoto Machida, Gina Carano or Hidehiko Yoshida. But there are much more, there is just uncountable volume of MMA warriors in the world. They train hard on every continent and every part of the planet. They fight at local events and try to reach the MMA heaven, fans and even paycheques. Top fighters are "produced" in top MMA gyms.

However MMA is not very old, the number of good MMA gyms, associations or clubs can reach several hundreds. Trainers and coaches prepare the fighters for their fights with caution and fun, but always with hard training rules. Top MMA gyms can also provide little bit more just to get the warriors to the top. So is it time to participate? Is there any top MMA gym in your location? Can you join the best and become one of them? Let's see…

As I already mentioned, there are lot of MMA gyms and I was not able to list them all. I had to use the selection, so I based it on these criteria:

  1. They attend the notable MMA contests such as UFC, Strikeforce, WEC, etc.
  2. Their fighter/fighters which are listed had at least one fight in 2010 or 2009. In fact, I was able to compile info about 993 MMA warriors.
  3. The gyms are "real" – some associations are only management companies and the fighters train in their local gyms or cities etc.
  4. There was a possibility to gain at least basic info about the fighhters and their gyms – I was really not able to get some of them because of the lack of propper information. In other cases, I just had to choose only 1 location out of many.

I have to say that the TOP 120 MMA gyms is not the definitive or authoritative list and the destinations may not be 100% perfect. In some cases the positioning system of google maps was lost and I had to check the locations manually.

But despite this fact, there is as much information as I was able to get about precisely 120 MMA gyms from all over the world and almost 1000 of their fighters on the map. And if the map can be useful for you, your friends or your blog, than I hope that good work has been done :) .
