SANTA MONICA, California--Sony announced Wednesday that a slimmer, lighter PSP handheld video game will be on the market in time for the Christmas holiday season.
Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai pulled one of the PSP devices from his pants pocket during an E3 Media and Business Summit press conference in one of the company's film studios near Santa Monica, California.
The revamped PSP is a third lighter than its predecessor, 19 percent slimmer and has improved battery life and video display, Hirai said.
The PSPs can be plugged into television sets to play on the larger screens or to watch video downloaded to the devices, according to Sony.
"All of the PSP entertainment content -- games, photos, video -- you can do on a television screen and on PSP as well," Hirai said.
The new PSPs are to be on store shelves in September with a price tag of about $170, on par with the current model.

Modern Art can make a fabulous (Christmas) gift, for the person who enjoys the style of open plan living. The hardest thing? Actually giving it away!
