Why do lots of Southern girls look like...?
How come in the south, I live in Alabama, almost all teenage girls have a "standard" of beauty. They have deep tans, dark blonde or highlighted hair, big smiles, perfect white teeth, oval shaped faces, and big eyes, and they always wear eyeliner, t shirts (like souvenir or sports team tshirts) and cheerleader shorts. I look nothing like these girls or dress like them. Why do lots of Southern girls look alike and why are these features considered beautiful here?
I think you're asking a really good question. I actually used to be a "southern girl" and used to dress that way...but I moved to the West when I was 21 and haven't dressed that way since. I felt much more free to express my own style the way I wanted to.
I would have to say that in the south more people tend to conform to a standard and people are more close-minded and critical when it comes to all the different styles and creative things they could do to enhance their appearance. I'm definitely not saying that it's right...in fact I don't think it's right at all.
Speaking from personal experience, I was raised in a small southern town, and all the girls had deep tans and blonde highlights and black eyeline, and wore rolled-up cheerleader shorts. I was one of those girls. We all looked the same and traveled in packs. It was just the thing to do. If you didn't you were considered weird. Then I went to college in yet another small southern town, where these trends continued. After I finished school, I got the heck outta there. It was pretty stifling.
I understand your frustration. I wish I had the guts back then to step out of the box and express myself more creatively, but live and learn I guess.
I'm not what kind of answer you are looking for here...but I definitely get where you are coming from. I guess the most important thing is to wear what makes you feel beautiful and stylish...because no matter what other people think, you're the one who is in charge of yourself. You have to be the one who decide what is right for you.
And, if not, you can always move someday
