A Man After God's Own Heart

He was a bad parent committed adultery, was a man of war, and violent at times. And he committed murder the murder of one of his most loyal friends and confidants. Yet David, in spite of his horrendous sins, was also a man after Gods own heart. He was anointed by God to be King of Israel and lauded throughout history as one of the great men of the Bible.  How can someone who did so much wrong be such a source of delight to God? Why would God give so much praise and place in the Scriptures to such a sinner?  We do not get clear answers to these questions when we consider the many pictures of a godly man promoted in the Church today. On one hand is the man always dressed in the black suit, white shirt, and red tie, who insists that his wife remain at home to raise the kids and manage the home front, while enforcing strict obedience in his children. He rises early every day for an hour of prayer and Bible study, reads through the Scriptures once every year, never cheats on his taxes, while always voting for the candidate who promises to lower them, and fulfills multiple leadership roles in church and community.  On the other hand is the model of the wild-at-heart spirit-warrior who howls at the moon, goes to church in jeans and a tee-shirt, shuns societies domesticating influence , and snarls at the  attempt to create a feminized, emasculated version of manhood. John the Baptist, living in the wilderness, is the model for this godly man who remains more wild and free than he does caged and domesticated.  Which model is correct? Better yet, is there anything in either of these models that con- forms to the picture of the godly man that God paints in the Scriptures? Following are some thoughts to wrestle with: A commandment-keeper. In 1 Samuel 13:14, we are taught, by the negative model and rejection of King Saul, that one characteristic of a man after Gods own heart is that he is a commandment-keeper. He always has in mind the words of Christ: If you love me, you will obey my commandments(John 14:15). Saul did not.  A God please. And the context in 1 Samuel reveals that commandment-keeping flows out of a preeminent desire to please God above all things. Unlike many men who struggle with self-pleasure and people-pleasing as competing idols, the man after Gods own heart is dedicated to please Him over all else, even if it results in personal suffering or social ostracization by others. Nothing hurts the man of God more than displeasing his Heavenly Father.   Knows Gods goodness. This is a man who meditates on, and recounts the goodness of, God (Psalm 40:4-5) and who trusts Him, not leaning on false gods or his own strength in time of trouble. An intimacy exists that has built an affection an emotional attachment that carries the relationship through thick and thin (Psalm 84:1-7).   A repentant heart. When the godly man does sin and he may sin robustly, as David did he always returns to God in contrite repentance (Psalm 32:1-5). Because his sins are covered by God, there is no deceit in his spirit (Psalm 32:2)he is clean inside even though he continues, on occasion, to sin in his life.   An effective leader. The context of 1 Samuel 13 also points to positive influence as a key characteristic of the godly man with an enduring rule as the major difference between the man after Gods own heart and the man who follows his own ways. Simply put, the godly man works diligently to build and lead families, ministries, and institutions that last. The ungodly man does not.   Finds strength and courage come from God. As the famous battle against Goliath revealed, David relied upon God and not his own prowess for strength in the face of battle (1 Samuel 17:32-49). He drew courage from Gods call and allowed no one to dissuade him not his brother, nor the king, nor the Philistine whom he slew.   Honors the order of God. Even though King Saul became insanely jealous of David and plotted continually to kill him, David did not pursue nor kill Saul, even though he had a chance to do so (1Samuel 24, 26). He was dedicated to honoring Gods anointed and would not upset the governing order that God had put in place.   Committed to justice and fair rule. Though he could have joined with his warriors who fought the A male kites to recover Israeli plunder that they had stolen to deny any of the recovered loot to those who did not fight (1 Samuel 30:16-25), David had the plunder divided equally among all those in his tribe, showing himself to be more than fair with his own people.   Pursues faith, love, and peace. In the New Testament model of godly men, Paul instructs Timothy on the attributes of good soldiering for the cause of Christ (2 Timothy 2:3-26). The Christian man after Gods own heart is a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth(2:15). Such a man does not secretly wish for nor linger around, but flees the evil desires of youth (2:22a). He pursues, instead, faith, love, and peace out of a pure heart(2:22b). He is admonished to avoid foolish arguments and stupid quarrels, able instead to gently teach others in the knowledge of the truth, hoping to lead them to repentance and salvation in Christ (2:23-26).   This is the heart of David. And this is why David, the awful sinner that he was, was so endearing to God was a man after Gods own heart. And this is the subtle, but great, difference with the legal who strives for sinless perfection, denying and minimizing his sins and lying to himself about his own, overstated righteousness.   In sum, the godly man has an inner life that mirrors the heart and character of his God. He may be either the most clean-cut and ram-rod straight Christian, or the hairiest, God-loving wild-man you ever saw. As the Scriptures reveal, God cares not one whit about our outer appearance and image projected out to our social world. It is our inner life that matters greatly to God. It is an inner world that passionately pursues God and Gods people that delights Him that be knights us as men after Gods own heart.  Remember Jesus rebuke of the Pharisees who were scandalized by Christ failure to engage in ritual washings. It is a rebuke a loving warning to all those who deny grace, forsake the inner way, and obsess with image, power, and status, seeking to attain Gods righteousness by their own desperate efforts. Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and the 0 clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness Woe to you Pharisees! For you tit he but neglect justice and the love of God Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who want to enter (Luke 11:39, 42a, 52).  Does this inner/outer reality of God accurately reflect your own priorities? Do you have the key to this kind of knowledge? Have you entered in, inviting others to follow? If not, what will you do this week this year to recalibrate your life and pursuits so they are more in line with the model He desires you to emulate?   One closing thought. Paul in I Corinthians 11:1 gives a clear challenge to every man, Be ye followers of me as I also am of Christ. After all, Jesus was the God-man.  If you want to know how you are doing, ask that little guy or gal who calls you dad and the one you call Heavenly Father. Its hard to lie to yourself in their presence.Take help from internet counseling.
