How did the Scandinavians go from Vikings to Greatest countries on Earth?

I am sure everyone knows of the vikings... the famous pillagers from Scandinavia that terrified much of europe around 1000... and the very same vikings that discovered Iceland, Greenland and North America...

But That is pretty much to the extend my knowledge of Scandinavian History. I know that there was a Swedish Empire around in the 19th century, but beyond that... Nothing.

So My question is What happened to cause the people that were feared 1000 years ago to have the highest standard of living in the world today? When did it happen? and Why?

These are a mystery. Life changes, they used to been feared now they ain't. Similar to the Huns. They were feared by even the Pope and the Pope had to pay a large sum of gold for Attila the Hun not to attack Rome. What happeend to the huns now? They ain't much.

what happeend to the mighty roman Empire? It's sjut a teensy weensy country called Italy that was so easily defeated in WW2.

The Swedish Empire was also not very large. It is called Empire but you cannot contrast it to the Empire image of Rome and stuff or the English, it was more of a few countries maybe not even that size.

Time deterioates everything. From the mighty Tzar to the Soviet Premier to a Prime Minister. It changes.

Also the people, the Viknis and the people today are significantly different. they aren't the same. You can't compare a Roman to an Ittalian in msot senses, because the Romans aren't Ittalian. The Romans are from Troy supposedly and they came to Italy and sorta married with the natives etc. So it's a bit different, plus the Romans ocne they had an Emprie had many Roman citizens who weren't Roman such as some greeks and Jewish people.

So, for my response, time changes things and who knows what happened and what will happen except God?
