filming police while arresting,against the law or not?

I live in Canada and I almost ran in trouble by filming police while doing the arrest on a person.They were very rough on that person as well as on me.it was very unpleasent experience at at all.They intimided me and threatend me.I am planning to put this video on network.
anyways it it against the law to film the cops or not?

--- I don't think it's against the law in Canada, but I can't be sure as I live and worked in the USA.
--- I do know that in the USA it is NOT illegal to video police while performing their duty with one EXCEPTION: that you do NOT in any way interfere with the arrest or of the officers doing their job.
--- The BIGGEST mistake I see with people trying to video police is that they are not actually just videoing the incident, they are emotionally involved and they then interfere and get arrested. By this I mean that they do one or more of a couple of things:
(a) They get too close, they try to stick the camera right into the officer's face because they are angry and they think this will somehow "show that cop." ! Instead they get noticed and then arrested. You can see it on YouTube a lot. They start trying to scare the cop by saying things like "whats your badge number" or "we have you now" or "you're breaking the law, you're beating a defenseless ,,,, etc. " You are wasting your time with this type of thing. Officers have heard it all before and it isn't going to change anything. They make up their minds before they start an arrest and they are not going to change it.
Also, you may find that the police will demand you to identify yourself. In the USA you are obligated to do so. Why? Because you are creating an evidentiary record with your video and it can be used by EITHER side. You might be contacted by investigators to see what you captured on video. AND in a very serious case the officers might even confiscate your video as evidence. If that happens demand to see a supervisor before you surrender it. Don't tell them you refuse, tell them you want to talk to a supervisor and turn it over to him/her. Then when a supervisor arrives if he also demands to take it make him give you are written receipt and demand to stay with your video until a copy is made. If he says no you can argue but if push comes to shove just make sure you get a receipt and document it all with a witness too if you can. Police can legally take evidence of a crime in the USA and that includes your video, BUT they are supposed to make and give you a copy.
---If they take your video then make sure you call their agency in the morning and complain and demand satisfaction. You can also call the DA's office. Don't go nuts if they don't give it to you as they just gave you a ready made state or national news story. You can call CNN or FOX and tell them how the police took your evidence and you can go on the internet too. So don't worry if they keep your video. The odds of that happening are EXTREMELY RARE so don't worry too much about it.
(b) They use spot lamps or lights that illuminate the officers. This may illuminate the picture scene for you but it also makes the officers targets and is a form of interference. You will have to get an ultra low lux camera or just take the shot with existing light.
(c) And this is the big one. THEY OPEN THEIR BIG FAT MOUTH and start getting involved and then get excited and get more and more worked up. This almost always leads to the camera person trying to grab officers or shout in their faces, or stick the lens in their face.

---IF you want to video what the police are doing you should make up your mind that you are either acting as a journalist or collecting photo evidence. In either case you should be more concerned with getting your picture and keeping it than uselessly showing your outrage at what YOU think is incorrect behavior on anyone's part. Keep your mouth shut and get the pictures.
--- You should also stay well away from the conflict. The Rodney King video was taken from clear across an intersection. The Reginald Denny video was taken from almost 500 feet up in a helicopter.
--- The point is that you don't have to be right next to the action to get good video of the action. Use your zoom. If you can get the video from across the street then do it from there. You will avoid any conflicts that way.
--- LASTLY, if an officer tells you to stop and get away DO IT!. Go across the street so that you can't possibly be interfering. Also, have a witness if you can. But most of all: DON'T BE AN IDIOT AND START A PISSING CONTEST WITH A MAN WEARING AN AUTOMATIC PISTOL!!!!!! You'll lose and you might lose your life.

--- having worked as a Deputy Sheriff for over 20 years I never worried about people videoing me as long as they didn't get in my way.
