Grateful Dead fans. Has Phil Lesh ever mentioned his inspirations?
I read his book, and I can only recall Lesh mentioning meeting Charles Mingus. Lesh went on to compliment Mingus, but Lesh doesn't play like Mingus (to my ear).
I don't think I have ever heard anyone that came before Lesh who Lesh sounds similar to.
Has Lesh ever mentioned any one? Also, have you ever heard any one who you think might have inspired him?
I read that Phil's playing was more influenced by piano players than bass players. I can't recall where I read it, but it makes sense considering his style is very different from most bass players and the fact they needed two drummers because Phil tended to wander away from the groove leaving Bill to fend for himself until Mickey was added, which didn't really help much either.
