Please help me remember this book!?

I'll start off by saying that the book I'm trying to remember is NOT Lord of the Flies, which is the answer everyone gives This is what I remember: some sort of virus kills all of the adults and the kids are all left to take care of themselves. I think the virus even killed animals? The kids form gangs to survive and loot through houses and warehouses. I remember the school was used as some sort of fortress.

There was a series out of New Zealand called "The New Tomorrow" (2005) which was a spin off of "The Tribe" (1999) In the series, the tribe names were: The Ants, The Barbs, The Warps, The Privs, and The Discarded.
Although these were movies or T.V. series, they have the exact same story line, and they may have been based on a book.
